February Region Of Focus: Rhone Valley
Travel with us this month to our newest featured wine region of Rhone, France. Rhone is divided into two distinct subregions, Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone located along the Rhone River. Rhone is famous for its big bold reds made with native grapes, Syrah & Grenache. Southern Rhone is known for its galets- small stones that have been washed down from the mountains which influence the famous muscular and bold Chateauneuf de Papes. The strong, cold mistral winds from the north blow southerly impacting the region during the winter months and can even cause damage to the vines.
For our flight we'll be predominantly focused on Southern Rhone. First in the flight, Chateau de Valcombe from the subregion Costieres de Nimes, a white blend with 70% Roussanne & 30% Marsanne. The winery is located in southern Rhone on the west side of the river. The soil consists of pebbles on limestone clay and is exposed to the sea. The grapes Marsanne and Roussanne are native varietals to Rhone and are traditionally blended. Roussanne being one of the 13 varieties (now 18 varieties as of 2009) allowed in Chateauneuf de Pape.
Next in our flight is a Rose from the Tavel region which is just north of Costieres de Nimes and exclusively produces Rose. The Corne Loup Tavel Rose is made with a blend of grapes, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Carignan. This area is known for their flat white stones, galets, & sandy soil. This particular rose was rated 93 points by Wine Enthusiast.
To round out our Rhone regional flight we are pouring Vieux Clocher Ventoux Rouge from the Ventoux region of Southeastern Rhone on the border with Provence. Compared to other neighboring regions this subregion makes a lighter and fruitier style blend. Made from 75% Grenache, 10% Carignan, 10% Syrah & 5% Cinsault. The vines all grow in Clay & chalky soil.
Throughout the month we will be rotating a selection of Rhone wines. Here are a few others in the cue: Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Blanc, Charles Thomas Cotes du Rhone Blanc, Serre des Vignes Viognier & Domaine du Pere Caboche vin de Pays du Vaucluse Le Petit Caboche Rouge. I have a feeling we’ll also pop open a Domaine du Vieux Telegramme Chateauneuf de Pape to offer by the glass.
